Victoria - The Real Birth Story

Victoria was due on August 4 2000. We patiently waited until that day but ... No Victoria. We were scheduled to report to the hospital at 5:45am on Monday (August 7, 2000) to have labor induced...... oooooo' nooooooooo ... At EXACTLY 2:07am Sunday morning, I was awakened to a WACK across my head... OWEN I THINK MY WATER BROKE. Not knowing if it was the real thing I called the Labor unit and asked a very friendly nurse... how do we know? After a brief explanation (I'll spare you the details) we made a determination that THIS WAS IT. That was the beginning of a Very Long day. We (ahemmmm) I managed to get the car packed with all of the 10,000 things that we had set out to take to the hospital. We showered, prepared the house and made a casual drive (ok.. kinda of a dash) to the hospital. We arrived at the hospital at 3:30am. I know what you are thinking-we (She) had a lot of stuff to do before we left (A load of laundry, makup, hair etc. Humph... women) Anyway, when we arrived at the hospital we went directly up to Labor and Delivery where the nurses hooked Cindy up to enough wires to power a small computer network. Then the waiting game began. We were anxious about calling our parents and friends due to the early hour. At 4:30AM we couldn't stand it any more. We made the 1st call to Angela (Caroline Claire's Mother) who was in DeQueen, AR. We had requested that she be there to help Cindy and me with the birth. She made it to town in less than 2 hours (Speed demon). Soon thereafter, we called Cindy's mother and my Mother. There was nothing to do except wait. The real labor pains kicked in about 9:30am. Wow! Have you ever seen the movie, you know the one with green pea soup and the head spinning?... Well she wasn't anything like that. The nurses did give her a mild pain reliever around 10:00am but I don't know if it helped the pain much but the entertainment value was great. Cindy was a little goofy hummm not good there. At 11:00am the nurse called for the epidural. At 12:30pm the anesthesiologist arrived and what a welcome site he was! You know the rule, bend forward, expose your spine and most importantly BE STILL! Well let me tell you, I wasn't sure that she was conscious because of how still she was. She did great! About 15 minutes later, Cindy was at peace with the world. What a wonderful discovery! Ok, back to the story at 2:00pm she was dilated to 2cm, at 4:00pm she was at 3cm. At this point Dr. Taylor was concerned that her pelvic bone was to flat for the baby to fit through. She wanted us to be aware that the delivery may require a cesarean section. Dr. Taylor said that she was not going to make that decision but Cindy and the Baby would "Force" the decision. She indicated that when Cindy was dilated to 4cm she should progress 1cm per hour. This was the standard labor curve. If Cindy came off of the curve then a cesarean would be necessary. Cindy hit 4cm at 6:00pm and the clock started. At 8:00 the doc checked her again and as we had feared she did not progress so we were on with the cesarean. We were both obviously nervous about the procedure, but they assured us that all would be ok. We were prepped for the surgery and made the short trip (seemed like hours) down to the operating room. It didn't take them long. At 8:42pm they delivered Victoria. Victoria was handed off to the pediatric team where they suctioned her to clear her lungs and nose and irritated her until she cried. Meanwhile, back at the operating table the surgeons were busy sewing Cindy up. It didn't take very long to get Victoria ready for her short ride up to the maternity floor. After a brief stop in front of Cindy to see her baby they wisked her off. I followed Victoria with video camera in one hand and 35mm still camera in the other. We watched patiently as the nurses cleaned Victoria, took her measurements, took her temp (don't ask where), and got a bath. It was several hours before Victoria and Cindy were actually formally introduced. It was a very touching momemt. Anyway thats most of the story. Enjoy the pictures and come see the baby!
